joimax Receives 510(k) Clearance for Percusys Pedicle Screw-Rod System

IRVINE, Calif., March 4, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The German company joimax®, developer of technologies and training methods for minimally invasive endoscopic spinal surgery, today announced it has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its Percusys® percutaneous pedicle screw-rod system.

The patented Percusys system is a multi-functional implant for use during spinal stabilization procedures. Its unique screw and instrument design enables a safer and more effective surgical technique with minimal steps for the surgeon. The single, small instrument set allows flexibility to perform surgery through a percutaneous, minimally invasive or open approach.

“During development, the main focus was on the ease-of-use of the system,” says Dr. Frank Hassel, specialist for spine surgery from Freiburg, Germany, who was instrumental to the Percusys development. “The idea was to reduce the complexity in instrumentation and simplify stabilization procedures to minimize the potential damage of soft tissues and improve overall patient outcomes.”

Percusys implants comprise single packaged, sterile, and pre-assembled pedicle screws with lengthening shaft and set-screw. All screws are color coded according to their diameter, cannulated, fenestrated, self-cutting and self-drilling. Each surgical step is carried out using the lengthening shaft, which is tightly connected to the tulip. The assembly allows for direct manipulation and does not require additional instrumentation. Shearing off the lengthening shaft can be done by a 360-degree rotation of the shaft breaker.

Percusyscan be usedin combination with the joimax® EndoLIF® O-Cage. “This offers an optimal solution for minimally invasive, endoscopic-assisted access to the intervertebral disc,” says Wolfgang Ries, CEO and founder of joimax. “Percusys® represents the next logical step in the development of endoscopic surgery and further strengthens the joimax position as an expert in this special market segment.”

Third international workshop on endoscopic spinal surgery using the TESSYS® method incorporating live operations

joimax® and the ATOS Private Clinic Munich present their largest international endoscopy workshop so far.

Karlsruhe, 16th September 2009: On 14th and 15th September a joimax® workshop on the endoscopic removal of disc herniations using the TESSYS® method took place in the ATOS Private Clinic Munich for the third time. A highlight of this international workshop was the transmission of three live operations, which the 25 participating orthopaedic and neurosurgeons were able to follow in the conference room in the neighbouring Sheraton Arabellapark Hotel.
Dr. med. Michael Schubert operated on three patients from Egypt, Denmark and Germany, describing the individual steps of the procedure and answering questions from the auditorium during the operations. Several workshop participants were also able to follow the operations directly from the operating theatre. The live operations followed a day of intensive training on cadavers in the Ludwig-Maximilian University, Munich. The participants travelled from far and wide for the workshop, with surgeons from Germany, Austria, Spain, Turkey and several Asian countries taking part. Faculty member and course instructor Dr. Menno Iprenburg, who heads his own clinic in Veenhuizen, the Netherlands, claimed: “In my opinion this was the best workshop so far!”

joimax® obtains full product registration in Thailand, and is now active in 10 Asian countries

The German based market leader of technologies and training methods for endoscopic minimally invasive spinal surgery is expanding its presence and recently has obtained full product registration from the Thai Food & Drug Administration (FDA). joimax® also has approvals in South Korea, China, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Vietnam. For Malaysia, Taiwan and Japan, the certification for the product range is expected in 2017. “We are constantly pushing the registration process in Asia to extend the availability of joimax® products. For years, joimax® has been working with the Korean Wooridul group, the world’s largest Specialized Spine Hospital Network. In a series of four courses, provided in basic and advanced level, the education of international spine surgeons is ensured. joimax® presents EndoLIF® as a world premiere at the Annual Meeting of DGNC

Karlsruhe, 24 May 2013. It has become a good tradition – but this time it will include a world premiere: As in previous years, joimax® will present a lunch symposium during the 64th Annual Meeting of the German Society of Neurosurgery DGNC to be held in Düsseldorf, Germany, on 27 May 2013. As a world premiere joimax® will introduce its novel EndoLIF® system for endoscopic stabilization of the lumbar spine. The joimax® Faculty Team had the chance to see this technology during its yearly User Meeting held at the Institute of Anatomy of the University of Mainz, Germany, in April. It will now be displayed to the broad expert audience of DGNC’s Annual Meeting.

Besides the endoscopic technology for the access to the disc compartment based on the well proven TESSYS® or iLESSYS® access method, the EndoLIF® system comprises an O-cage (oblique cage) and a screw and rod system for posterior percutaneous stabilization. The advantages of this procedure are obvious:
– Smooth, atraumatic access due to dilation of tissue
– Dura and nerves are protected by the working tubes
– Dorsal bone structures are generally not affected
– O-Cage with osteo-conductive surface providing the optimum substrate for cell growth
– Stabilization via screw and rod system for percutaneous i.e. minimally invasive positioning
Indications for this procedure are the degenerative disease of intervertebral discs, mechanical instabilities and spondylolisthesis grade I and II. CE approval is expected by summer 2013.

The joimax® lunch symposium will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Kiwit (Berlin). Dr. Guntram Krzok (Friedrichroda) will present „TESSYS® and iLESSYS® for multiple decompression therapies“. Dr. Bernd Illerhaus (Recklinghausen) will then draw the line to the EndoLIF® technology with an outlook on future therapeutic options. „The EndoLIF® system is the next logical step in the evolution of endoscopic access technologies to the spinal canal for gentle and safe minimally invasive implantation of cages with subsequent percutaneous stabilization“, states Dr. Illerhaus with conviction.

After founding joimax® 24-years ago, Wolfgang Ries is stepping down as CEO to focus on research and development and to lead ESPINEA® Endoscopic Spine Academy, the only endoscopic training program accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Taking over as CEO is Maximilian Ries, who during his 16-year tenure at joimax®, held diverse leadership roles in product management, R&D, operations, and finance. He served as General Manager from 2016 to 2021 before returning to Germany in 2022 where he was most recently Executive Vice President of Global Operations and Business Development of joimax®.

Among the products showcased was a new member of the joimax® TESSYS® family, TESSYS® Thx, a system specifically developed for the symptomatic thoracic deherniation and decompression treatment. Surgeries utilizing TESSYS® Thx can avoid complications often associated with traditional open and microsurgical approaches, such as significant muscle damage, bony resection, and morbidities.

SpineWeek takes place every four years and is viewed as one of the most important congresses, representing numerous international society leaders.

joimax® inspires Thai-German Neurosurgery Congress participants for TESSYS®

Karlsruhe, 6th of October 2011. joimax® opened doors for the Thai-German Neurosurgery congress participants, under the patronage of the German Academy for Neurosurgery (GANS) and the presidency of the Director of the Clinic for Neurosurgery at the “Städtisches Klinikum” in Karlsruhe, Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Uwe Spetzger – this year taking place in Karlsruhe, South Germany.

joimax® organised a lunch symposium in line with the congress, beginning with a company conducted tour through the facility where the participants visited amongst others the departments of the technical staff, research, development and construction – the core competencies and heart of the company. Also interesting were the explanations of the company founder and managing director Wolfgang Ries speaking about the exhibits in the so called internal “museum”, documenting the development of the 10 years company history,
showing prototypes of instruments, endoscopes and devices from the founding years.

The application of TESSYS® was presented by Prof. Dr. med. Ju?rgen Kiwit, Chief Physician of the Helios Hospital for Neurosurgery in Berlin Buch, in his demonstrative lecture with many pictures and videos. “In my opinion the minimally invasive TESSYS® method is the future of spine surgery, especially when treating herniated discs and stenosis. The advantages of this gentle method are more than obvious,” he stated.

The full potential of the endoscopic spinal surgery was impressively shown by Wolfgang Ries in his overview presentation: with special instruments it is also suitable for treating e.g. spinal canal stenosis and so makes – besides the transforaminal – the interlaminar access possible also, so that the spinal canal is now accessible from all sides, meaning 360°. The instruments of the next generation with flexible forceps, reamers and endoscopes are already very advanced in the joimax® development pipeline. An endoscopic assisted spine stabilisation system will open further wide ranges of applications.
